ORCID provides researchers with a unique, persistent identifier that connects them to their research outputs, affiliations and activities throughout their careers. Australia’s strong uptake of ORCID has been a genuine success story, helping improve the quality of institutional research information while enabling richer reporting, more accurate attribution, and clearer insights into research impact across the sector.
One identifier, recognised everywhere
What is ORCID?
ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is an open, not-for-profit, community-driven registry of unique researcher identifiers. Each ID connects individual researchers to their activities and outputs, wherever they’re published.
It is a digital persistent identifier that tells you apart from other researchers (especially anyone with a similar name). It provides a single place to manage your own record, and a simple way to be found by others.
Any researcher or research contributor can get a free ORCID ID.
Benefits for organisations
Consortium membership allows member organisations access to tools that connect their own systems to ORCID, from API access to integration support and testing environments. These tools make it easy for staff and researchers to link their ID to the organisation's own records, at scale.

The Australian ORCID Consortium
Changing the way researchers connect to their work, around the globe.
Persistent identifiers connect the global research ecosystem and strengthen Australia’s own research infrastructure.
Its adoption aligns with investments like the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) – making it an essential part of moving Australia’s research capabilities forward. And as such, it features prominently in the Australian National PID Strategy and Roadmap.
The case for ORCID extends beyond simply tracking research contributions. Without it, our organisations are wasting time, losing money and missing opportunities for collaboration, due to inefficiencies in rekeying information.
AAF and the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) commissioned a cost benefit analysis report to analyse the benefits of persistent identifiers to Australian research organisations.
The numbers were significant: close to 38,000 person-days a year lost to rekeying the same information; a direct cost of close to $24 million, and leading to a further $84 million a year in missed opportunity for technology transfer and innovation-led growth.
How to join
To join the Australian ORCID Consortium, your organisation must be located in, and organised under the laws of Australia.

Membership fees

For organisations, the Australian ORCID Consortium fees cover the ORCID membership and what it costs to lead and support the Consortium nationally.
As a not-for-profit registered charity, the AAF charges fees on a cost-recovery basis. If your organisation is keen on joining the consortium, please contact us to find out more.
